 'ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE!'

Welcome to Year 1

We are on Twitter and we will be tweeting with the children throughout the day!
Don't forget to follow us!!

If you have been absent ,look below for catch up activities you can do at home!
Once you do the work don't forget to bring it in!

Autumn Term 1:
Off on a Pirate Adventure...... Arrrrr!!!

English

In Autumn term, we will be listening to stories about Pirates, writing instructions to  make a pirate hat and looking at non fiction books to find out about 'real' pirates from the past.
We will be practising our writing skills and learning what we need to do to make our sentences perfect!!
This term, we will be continuing to work hard to leave spaces between our words and remembering to use a capital letter and  a full stop  when writing our sentences.

Catch up activity - Can you form all your lower case letters correctly? Can you match upper case and lower case letters together? Can say the alphabet names in order?

Maths

In Maths, we will be practising counting aloud up to 100 and recognising teens numbers. We will be finding 1 more and less than given numbers and recording early addition and subtraction using mathematical symbols.

We will do lots of practical maths to help us learn new maths ideas and will be encouraged to use new maths vocabulary that we have been learning to explain how we solve problems.

We are striving to be super independent learners!

Catch up activity - Can you form all your numbers correctly?

Reading

The children will read at least once a week in their guided reading groups.

Year 1 are encouraged to change their home reading books on a Monday and a Thursday . We have a basket with different coloured books in and the children can choose a new book once they have read it at least 3 times. The 1st time they will be getting to know the book. The 2nd time they will be reading the book with more clarity and beginning to understand it. The 3rd time we encourage parents to use the guided reading questions provided to ask the children about the story as this helps when we come to our half termly assertive mentoring tests :) It is important that the child can not only read the book but also understand what they are reading. We will re-test the children at the end of this half term and this will determine whether your child will change a book band / colour :)

Spellings
Towards the end of the Autumn term,  we will begin to have our spelling tests every Friday. New words will be sent home on a Friday for the children to practice at home.

PE Days

On Monday and Tuesdays we have P.E.,  so please ensure your child has their full P.E. kit in school, (tshirt, shorts and pumps) all earrings must be removed or covered up. If your child needs a new P.E. kit they are available to buy at the school office.

Dates for your diary:

Roald Dahl Day : Thurs 13th September 2018

We look forward to each and everyday in Year 1 and hope that all of the children enjoy their time with us as we continue to achieve excellence.

We are on Twitter and the children will be tweeting thoughout the day!
Don't forget to follow us.

Thank you

Mrs Clark, Mrs Gayton & Miss Boyle
