Welcome to Year 2

If you have been absent look below for catch up activities you can do at home! Once you do the work don't forget to bring it in!

English

This half term we are reading a book called 'Jim and the Beanstalk' by Raymond Briggs and finding out about Giants. In our writing we will be learning to use adjectives, nouns, conjunctions and subordination to write stories, information texts letters.  Every Friday the children will bring home a list of spellings to learn for a test the following week. Please help your child to learn their weekly spellings. Our big focus in year 2 is reading comprehension so the children will be answering lots of questions about the texts they are reading at home and school. Please encourage your child to read at home as often as possible.

Maths

This half term we will be learning all about numbers to 100 and looking at place value. We have already been writing the numbers words and matching them to numerals and pictures. We will be solving lots of mathematical problems and using our reasoning skills. This week we have been busy using our measuring skills to measure some large footprints which a Giant left in our classroom. At home it would be great if you could help your child to learn their 2, 3 and 5 times tables.

Topic

This half term we are asking the question ...Would you rather live in England or Africa?

We have already had lots of exciting homework from the children about Africa which the children have loved sharing with the rest of the class. Thank you for your support. We have been busy dancing the Waka Waka, and producing some exciting artwork. Ask your children to show you their fantastic dances. Next half term we will be continuing with the African theme and making musical instruments. If you have any useful containers (e.g pringles tube, coffee tins) at home please bring them into school.

As part of our Topic we had an amazing adventure to Knowsley Safari Park. We learned so many interesting facts and even touched an African land snail called Gary. Did you know a group of Zebra's are called a Dazzle?

Catch up activities

English

Can you write a noun phrase about a Giant?

Maths

Can you recall your 5 times table?

Reading

Each day we expect the children to bring their book bags with their reading books and diary so they can read to an adult at school. The children will be expected to read at home on a daily basis and parents to write a comment in their diaries. Once the children have read their book they can change it independently from the basket in the classroom.

Homework

This will be given every Friday and it will consist of Maths or Literacy. The children will be expected to return their completed homework by the following Thursday.

We are also sending out weekly spellings, please make sure you are going over these with your child.

We also expect children to read each night and for a comment to be added in their reading record.

PE Days

On Monday and Tuesdays we have P.E. so please ensure your child has their full P.E. kit in school, (tshirt, shorts, pumps) all earrings must be removed or covered up.  New PE Kits are available to buy from the school office.

We look forward to each and everyday in Year 2 and hope that all of the children enjoy their time with us as we continue to strive for excellence.

We are on Twitter and the children will be tweeting thoughtout the day! Don't forget to follow us.

Thank you
